Prerequisite: Fin 600. Examines the trade-off between risk and return in the context of historical analysis, portfolio optimization, the Capital Asset Pricing Model, and other alternative models. Begins with the understanding of the Modigliani and Miller results and introduces bankruptcy, taxes, information asymmetries and other market imperfections, financial options, put-call parity and option pricing.

Prerequisite: Fin 600. Introduces the role of banking institutions and investment banks in the domestic and international money market and capital environment to the financial managers. Covers instruments and services of financial intermediaries that are crucial to business management. Presents a range of discussions from the financial services and facilities of regional banks to money-center banking institutions. Examines the alternatives of project financing, lending requirements and regulations, project financing, and role of intermediaries in local and international transactions. Focuses on the private placement procedures of all types of securities in the capital market and the unique role undertaken by the investment banking firms. Provides insight into the public offering process for existing and venture capitalized firms.

Prerequisites: FIN 600. Introduces students to futures, options, and other derivative securities. Topics include option valuation models, principles of forward and futures pricing, structure of markets for derivative securities, and strategies for hedging and speculation.
+ FIN 650 Investment Analysis and Portfolio Theory 3 Credits
Prerequisite: FIN 600. Provides a basic course in the theory and practice of investing. Presents an in-depth study of why and how to form portfolios of securities, using a significant amount of mathematical and statistical analysis to answer these questions. Includes theories of asset pricing based on the relationship between risk and return. Discusses criteria for selecting specific securities in different asset classes, such as, stocks, bonds, and derivatives.

Prerequisites: IS 677 or MIS 645. Explores issues and approaches in managing information systems in organizations and how they integrate, support, and enable various types of organizational capabilities. Addresses issues relating to defining a high-level technology infrastructure and the systems that support the operational, administrative, and strategic needs of the organization. Dr. Egbelu is a Distinguished Professor and Dean of the School of Management at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Newark, New Jersey, and also holder of the Then and Clark Chair in Management. Prior to joining NJIT, he served as the Dean of NSF (National Science Foundation) Academy in Washington, D.C., the premier U.S. research agency. As Dean, he was the chief learning officer and a member of the U.S. Government Senior Executive Service, the highest grade level in the U.S. government. He served as the Dean of Engineering and Bert Turner Distinguished Professor at Louisiana State University, a college with a faculty size of 150 and staff size of 90. He also served as Professor and Chair of Industrial Engineering at Iowa State University, Assistant and Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering at Pennsylvania State University, and Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Syracuse University. Prior to his appointments at Iowa State, he also served as an NSF Program Director for three research programs. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and a Fellow of Nigerian Academy of Sciences. He has served on the advisory boards of many organizations, including the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, multiple Directorates at NSF, and Louisiana Foundation for Excellence in Science, Technology, and Education. He is a registered professional engineer in Louisiana.

Professor Egbelu has made notable contributions to engineering education and research. He is a renowned researcher in material handling, cross-docking, supply chain management, manufacturing systems analysis, and scheduling. He has published over 150 technical papers, 76 of these in archival journals. He has supervised 15 Ph.D. and over 30 master's students. He has collaborated with researchers worldwide. He was a founding member of the Africa-USA Conference series on Manufacturing Technology.

Dr. Cheickna Sylla is a Professor of Decision Sciences and MIS at the School of Management, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from SUNY at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York. His teaching and research interests include: statistical analyses and applied operations research methods to human machine interfaces studies, project management, distribution logistics, management information systems, decision support systems, and operations management. His research publications appear in IEEE Transactions in Systems, Man and Cybernetics; IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management; European Journal of Operations Research; Computers and Industrial Engineering; Control Engineering Practice; Cost Management; International Journal of Management and Decision Making; International Journal of Information Technology and Management; International Journal of Networking and Virtual Organizations; International Academy of Business and Economics; and International Environmental Agreements: Politics, Law and Economics, etc. He published numerous articles in conference proceedings. Dr. Wei Xu is an assistant professor of accounting in the School of Management at New Jersey Institute of Technology. She received a B.S. in Accounting from Nankai University, and received both an MBA and a Ph.D. in Accounting from Rutgers University. She is a certified public accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and American Accounting Association. She also had professional work experience with the AICPA XBRL group, Deloitte Touche Tomastsu LLP tax department, TianJun Bio-Tech Corp accounting department, and some other companies before starting her academic career.

Dr. Xu’s current research interests are mostly market-based empirical financial accounting studies, including fixed assets and goodwill impairment studies; earnings management studies; and China-related studies involving ownership structure, earnings quality, and auditors’ effectiveness. She’s also interested in bubble economy, auditing, forensic accounting, corporate finance, and XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) and has many working papers and on-going projects in these areas. Her recent research has been published in Advances in Accounting, Research in Accounting Regulation, and International Journal of Behavioral Accounting and Finance.

Michael Ehrlich, Ph.D., had an international business career before joining NJIT’s School of Management as assistant professor of finance. Ehrlich’s research focuses on financial markets and institutions, with an emphasis on market failures. His current interest has been the unintended consequences of financial market innovation with special attention to structured investment vehicles, the financial investment innovation which grew to more than $400 billion worldwide before collapsing in the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance and The American Economist published his views on the structure of financial markets and foreign exchange risk.

He spent his last Wall Street years at Bear Stearns as senior managing director of the emerging markets fixed income business. Earlier stints included positions of increasing responsibility at Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb and Salomon Brothers, where he worked in the Government Arbitrage group with John Meriwether. Upon leaving Wall Street, Ehrlich started FineStar Imaging LLC, a small technology company that specialized in document production and management. He sold FineStar in 2007.

Today, along with teaching, Ehrlich participates in NJIT’s small business incubator program, the Enterprise Development Center (EDC). Ehrlich, who belongs to the New York Angels, works with start-up companies.

Dr. Rapp is the first Henry J. Leir Professor of International Trade and Business at The New Jersey Institute of Technology’s School of Management and Director of the Leir Center for Financial Bubble Research.

He has had an extensive international career in academia, business and government and joined NJIT after completing a year in Japan as a Fulbright Scholar and APSIA Visiting Professor at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. While in Kyoto, he assessed the political economic impact of Japan’s rapidly aging population while lecturing on the Asian Financial Crisis and the History of Investment Banking. Dr. Rapp has been the Chair in Economic Relations with Japan and International Business at the University of Victoria in Canada, Director of Yale’s International Relations Program, a Senior Research Fellow at Columbia University´s Center on Japanese Economy and Business and its East Asian Institute, and the Toyota Visiting Professor of International Business at Columbia. He continues as a Senior Research Associate at Columbia where he has directed two multi-year projects under grants from the US-Japan Friendship Commission and the Sloan Foundation examining US, EU and Japanese firms’ use of information technology to improve global competitiveness.

Before entering into fulltime teaching and research, Dr. Rapp was active in business and government as Executive Director for Bank of America´s Corporate Finance Group in Tokyo responsible for North Asia, Vice President at Mitsui Nevitt Capital Corporation in charge of Mergers and Finance, and Commercial Counselor at the US Embassy in Tokyo. Prior to his leave with the Federal Government, he was group head Bank of America´s Project Finance Section for Mining and Minerals worldwide and a Vice President with JP Morgan. Earlier in his career he was a consultant with the Boston Consulting Group in Boston and Tokyo, an adjunct professor at NYU and Fordham Universities, and an economist for AID in Korea and Vietnam. Elected a director of the Japan Fund in 1991, he continued in this capacity until 2005 and was a member of the executive, audit and valuation committees. He was a board member of the Association of Japanese Business Studies from 2003-2005.

Dr. Rajiv Mehta (Ph.D., Drexel University) is Professor of Marketing at the School of Management, New Jersey Institute of Technology. Previously, he served on the faculty of Loyola University New Orleans and, prior to entering academia, worked in sales and marketing for an international manufacturer of steel wire ropes and cables.Dr. Mehta has co-authored two university-level textbooks: Sales Management: Building Customer Relationships and Partnerships (2009), andPersonal Selling: Building Customer Relationships and Partnerships, (2007), 2nd Edition, both published by Houghton-Mifflin (now CENGAGE Learning).Additionally, his research has been widely published in major academic journals and presented at national and international academic conferences. Enterprise Development Center

Collaboration That Drives Success

The Enterprise Development Center (EDC) on the NJIT campus houses the oldest and largest business incubator program in New Jersey. Since 1988, its focus has been on helping promising start-up technology companies to successfully bring their business into the marketplace by providing office and lab space, financial help, business and technology services, and expert advice. These for-profit businesses must be developing or possess a high-tech or life science-related product, process, or service to be accepted into the EDC.

MBA online students can also benefit from the work of the EDC. Faculty working with the EDC incorporate what is happening in the incubator into their teaching, providing insight into the latest developments in the technological and business aspects of real-time technology commercialization. I graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, in 1998 with a BA in Psychology. I grew up on the Rollins College campus; my father enjoyed a 39-year tenure as a professor of physics, department chair and interim dean of faculty there. I was raised to value educational achievement as a key to a bright, prosperous future. Having worked as an enrollment advisor since 2007, I feel fortunate to have witnessed hundreds of students earn their graduate degree and reach their goals.

As a mother of two young children, my time away from my students is spent parenting my kids, volunteering at their school, experimenting in the kitchen, and working in my garden. I have also been known to be a bit of a closet baseball and football fan.

You will receive the exact same NJIT diploma as the on-campus student. While the program solely utilizes an online learning environment, your diploma will not include the word “online.” Instead, your diploma will read “Master of Business Administration.”
