Steven Chien is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). He holds a B.S. degree from Tamkang University in Taiwan and an M.S. and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland at College Park. Between 1985 and 1996, he worked for China Engineering Consultants Inc. (Taipei, Taiwan), University of Maryland (College Park, MD), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA-TFHRC, McLean, VA), and Information Dynamic Inc. (Washington, D.C.) on various transportation projects. He has been heavily involved in developing microscopic traffic simulators CORSIM for FHWA and conducted experiments in evaluating various ITS applications and transportation management strategies. Since 1996, he supervised many research grants funded by public (e.g., USDOT, FHWA, and NJDOT) and private (e.g., Greyhound Line Inc.) sectors.
Dr. Chien's current research activities and interests include: (1) travel time prediction in congested traffic networks, (2) mathematical and simulation modeling, (3) transportation system analysis, (4) intelligent transportation systems, (5)intermodal passenger transport, and (6) winter road maintenance planning and operation. His teaching activities include undergraduate and graduate courses: Introduction to Transportation Systems, Civil Engineering Design (Transportation), Transportation Engineering, Urban Systems Engineering, Public Transportation Systems Operations and Technologies, Mass Transportation Systems, and Traffic Safety.
Dr. Chien is a member of various professional associations, including Sigma Xi, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society for Engineering Education, Transportation Research Board, and Institute of Transportation Engineers. He is the faculty advisor to the student chapter of Institute of Transportation Engineers at NJIT.
Dr. Chien has authored and co-authored many articles published in refereed journals, conferences proceedings, and project reports. He currently serves as a member on the editorial board of Journal of Enterprise Information Management and Associate Editor of the Journal of Advanced Transportation.
